Step 1 - Turning off the water and draining
Locate the main supply stopcock and turn it clockwise to cut
off the water supply. Open the taps to drain the system.
Step 2 - Removing the tap head
Taps have an outer casing, which you will need to remove.
Do this by hand or with a padded spanner or pipe wrench.
Disassemble the tap carefully, taking note of the order in
which things come apart. Components will vary from tap to
tap but may include a hexagonal nut and retaining screws.
Step 3 - Removing and replacing the washer
Examine the washer to see if it is damaged or worn. If in
doubt, replace it. Washers come in all shapes and sizes
and it is important to replace like for like.
Step 4 - Checking the tap aperture
The tap aperture may have become contaminated with swarf
or debris or it may have become worn. Check the inside of
the aperture for rough edges.
Step 5 - Using a universal re-seating tool
To regrind the base you will need a universal re-seating tool.
First you need to insert it into the tap aperture. If it has
a locking nut tighten it at its base.
Step 6 - Regrinding the tap valve seat
The handle on the top of universal re-seating tool should
be turned clockwise to regrind the tap. Be careful not to
over-grind the seat. Once completed remove the tool.
Step 7 - Reassembling the tap
Reassemble the tap in the opposite order you took it apart.
Turn the water back on at the stopcock. Check for any leaks.
